A recipe from an 1840s cookbook for stewed calf's head. The directions call for the calf's head to be "split and opened and cleaned" and then stewed with six large onions and a pint of claret. From the University of Iowa Library's DIY history project.

Planet of the Apes Redux
In the system's 108 years there's never been a disaster on the scale of Hurricane Sandy. So far seven subway tunnels under the East River are flooded. The MTA released a statement this morning about damage from last night's storm: "Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on our entire transportation system, in every borough and county of the region. It has brought down trees, ripped out power and inundated tunnels, rail yards and bus depots."
It could take four days to get most of the system up and running again.
The page this image came from is down at the moment due to the storm, so not sure what the story is. If you find out, let me know.

Pinata cookies with a little Nirvana on the side
My favorite nugget on the interwebs today is this visuals-only recipe for gorgeous pinata cookies.
Make them for somebody you love!
Yourself!
And I love the Kurt Cobain soundtrack.
Sometimes baking Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Let me know how your cookies turn out.
